The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive, the brand’s most potent electric vehicle to date, has been revealed by BMW’s M Performance automobile division. The electric sedan, which makes its premiere at the Shanghai motor show, features a newly developed dual-motor drivetrain with a combined 660 horsepower (hp), which is around 41 horsepower more than the system used by the iX M60 xDrive, which will be released in 2022.

A 101.7kWh lithium-ion battery placed inside the CLAR chassis of the new vehicle supplies electricity. The i7 M70 xDrive is said to have a range of between 488km and 560km on the WLTP test cycle, with a combined consumption of between 23.8kWh and 20.8kWh per 100km, thanks to its own specially programmed power electronics system.

This is accomplished by using the new “Max Range” driving mode, which caps the top speed and power of the electric drivetrain. According to BMW M, braking can result in the recovery of up to 228kW of electric energy.

The 107.8kWh battery-powered EQS 53 has WLTP range estimates of between 529 and 586 kilometers, and its consumption is estimated to be between 23.9 and 21.5 kW per hundred kilometers.

Powertrain and Performance

The latest electric-powered M Performance model is driven by a rear electric motor with up to 490 horsepower and a front electric motor with 258 horsepower at its core. Due in part to a proprietary six-coil stator design, the latter is asserted to offer a new benchmark in power density at 2.41kW per kilograms.

With the M Launch Control and M Sport Boost features engaged, the two electric motors in the i7 M70 xDrive provide a total of 1,015Nm of torque, with up to 1,100Nm available for brief bursts of full-throttle acceleration. In contrast, the regular i7 xDrive 60’s dual motor electric drivetrain produces 544 horsepower and 744 Nm of torque.

In addition, it contrasts with the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4Matic+’s stated 658 horsepower and 950 Nm. However, the closest competitor to the i7 M60 xDrive boosts its capabilities to 761 horsepower and 1,020 Nm with an AMG Dynamic Plus system.

Exterior

The electric M performance sedan stands out from other i7 variants thanks to its newly designed front bumper and distinctively designed grille with lights. Wider sills are present beneath the doors, as well as ‘double arm’ external mirror housings, further back. The i7 M70 xDrive’s rear bumper has been updated, adding a new valance and diffuser feature.

The exterior appearance is enhanced by high gloss features provided as part of the M Performance Package. Additionally, customers can request a two-tone paint treatment through BMW Individual.

BMW i7 M70 xDrive in India

In India, BMW currently offers the i7 xDrive 60, which has an ex-showroom price of Rs 1.95 crore. It is anticipated that the German automaker will also introduce the i7 M70 xDrive here.
