The Volkswagen Virtus has scored a 5-star rating in the latest round of Latin NCAP safety tests. While the car tested is sold in the Mexican market, it is manufactured in India. However, the India-made model sold in Latin America is offered with more safety features as standard.
Latin NCAP has tested the base variant of the Virtus, and this is the first ever safety test for the midsize sedan. It scored 92 percent in adult occupant protection tests, scoring 36.94 points out of a total of 40 points. In the child occupant protection tests, the Virtus got a 92 percent rating, earning 45 points out of a total of 49.
The Virtus earned the least rating pedestrian and vulnerable road users tests as it scored a 53 percent rating. It scored 25.48 points in this test, out of a maximum of 48. The midsize sedan earned an 85 percent rating in the safety assist systems test, with a score of 36.54 out of a total of 43.
While the base models of the India-spec Virtus come with only two airbags as standard, the Mexican model is offered with six. The Mexican model is a left-hand drive model and the Indian model is a right-hand drive. Additionally, the Mexican-spec Virtus also gets Autonomous Emergency Braking as an option, which is not available in India.
Visually, the Virtus in Mexico gets a different set of headlamps than the Indian model. Furthermore, the Virtus is available with only 16-inch alloy wheels here, the Mexican-spec models are offered with up to 17-inch wheels.
Given that the India-made, Mexican-spec Virtus has scored a 5-star rating at Latin NCAP safety tests, the India-spec model is also likely to get similar scores at the Global NCAP safety tests. Furthermore, the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq, which are based on the same MQB A0 IN platform as the Virtus, also scored a 5-star rating in the GNCAP safety tests, which now has new protocols to test cars.
