Maruti Suzuki is the first company to sell a total of 25 million cars and SUVs. It is also the first company to reach this sales milestone.
The milestone comes 40 years after Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan signed a joint venture agreement with Maruti Udyog, which was the company that came before Maruti Suzuki.
This sales milestone comes a little over two months after Maruti Suzuki became the only company in India to have made more than 25 million passenger vehicles in total, which it did in November.
The company started up in 1983 and made the Maruti 800, which was the first car in India. Today, the company has two state-of-the-art factories in Gurugram and Manesar, both in Haryana. Together, the two facilities have the ability to make 1.5 million units per year.
Maruti Suzuki had been making cars for 23 years before it sold its 5 millionth unit in February 2006. It took another six years to sell the next 5 million units. Number grew even faster after that, and it took seven years to go from 10 million to 20 million units. It only took four years to make the last 5 million units, and the 25 million mark was passed earlier this month.
Maruti Suzuki sells 17 different models in India right now and is working to make hybrid and CNG models more popular. Maruti Suzuki has sold about 2.1 million hybrid and CNG models so far.
Maruti Suzuki sold more than 1.5 million cars in 2022, which was a 15% increase from the year before. Its smaller cars, like the Celerio, Wagon R, Swift, Ignis, and Baleno, were a big part of the brand’s growth. In 2022, they made up 55 percent of Maruti Suzuki’s sales, with 8,69,040 units sold. SUVs and MPVs made up 21% of the carmaker’s total sales last year, selling 3,37,157 units.
Its entry-level models, the Alto and S-Presso, saw a drop of more than 17 percent, with 2,27,824 units sold. This was because demand in the mass market segment was going down.
Maruti Suzuki has about 3,500,000 units of orders that haven’t been filled yet. It would have done better if the semiconductor supply chain problem hadn’t stopped production at different times of the year.
Maruti Suzuki was in second place for Utility Vehicle (UV) sales in the current FY 2023, behind Tata Motors. Even though there was a crisis with semiconductors from April to December 2022, Maruti Suzuki sold 2,60,172 SUVs and MPVs, which is a 22 percent increase from the same time last year. Tata and Mahindra, which both have more UV models, are growing faster than Maruti in this segment.
With its new Grand Vitara and steady demand for the new Brezza and Ertiga, the car company is likely to get back some of the market share it lost with the UV.
Suzuki just said that by FY2030, it will have six new EVs in India. By 2025, the first fully electric Maruti will be on the roads in India. It will be the production version of the eVX midsize SUV concept shown at Auto Expo 2023. Maruti Suzuki will focus on making smaller EVs for the mass market.
Maruti Suzuki will soon release the Fronx SUV and the highly anticipated Jimny off-roader. The two models were shown for the first time to the world at the 2023 Auto Expo, and reservations are already being taken for them.
