The first teaser for Honda’s upcoming SUV for India has finally been made public. The brand has confirmed that this new SUV will come out in the summer of 2023. It has been in the works for a long time. We’ve already said that this Honda SUV should come out by the holiday season of 2023.
The only picture Honda Car India has put on social media is a silhouette of the SUV it is making. But the teaser does show some interesting things about how the SUV will look. First of all, this SUV for India will look like the newer Honda SUVs sold around the world. It will have an upright nose and grille with wide wraparound headlights, a multi-slat grille with a big Honda logo in the middle, and LED daytime running lights above the headlights. The LED daytime running lights could have a connected look like the ones on the Kia Seltos.
What can also be said for sure is that the SUV will have a roof that tapers like a coupe. It will also have big wheels and chunky cladding on the wheel arches to give it a rugged look.
Even though the SUV in the teaser looks a lot like the Honda HR-V sold in other countries, it is actually a completely different model. The front bumper seems to have a dedicated air dam, a fake skid plate, and round fog lights. The second and most important difference is that the wheel arches are not round like those on the HR-V. Instead, they are more angular, which shows that the body panels on this SUV will be different from those on the HR-V.
The new midsize SUV from Honda will be between 4.2 and 4.3 metres long and built on an updated version of the platform used by the Amaze in India.
The 121hp, 1.5-liter, naturally aspirated gasoline engine from the fifth-generation Honda City will be in the upcoming midsize SUV. Honda will also offer the 1.5-liter strong-hybrid gasoline engine found in the City e:HEV. Both powertrains already have similar gearbox options in India: a 5-speed manual and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the 1.5-liter NA petrol, and an e-drive transmission for the strong-hybrid.
Sources say that this new SUV will be made with India in mind and will be shown for the first time there in April or May of this year. The price won’t be known until sometime during the holiday season this year. When it comes out, it will be in a very competitive segment with cars like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun. The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder are also strong hybrid options. Sources say that a lot of this new Honda SUV will be made in the United States, so prices should be low.
