A new hardcore off-roader from Chinese automaker BYD is aimed squarely at the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and is scheduled to debut in China in 2023 and on international markets starting in 2024.
The five-seat hybrid SUV is the first in the Chinese company’s new F model series, which will eventually encompass other SUVs and pickup trucks. It is shown in prototype form in an internet video.
Before to its anticipated appearance at the 2023 Shanghai auto show in April, information about the off-roader, which has the internal codename SF, is still scant. Even though BYD representatives claim it has a length of about 5,000mm and a wheelbase of 2,850mm.
The SF will be powered by a new petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain with a Mercedes-Benz G63-beating 671hp, according to BYD. “More than 1,200km” is the combined range. Drive is transferred via an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive with fully variable power distribution between the front and rear axles, as well as torque vectoring between the rear wheels. The SF, which is built on a ladder-frame chassis, will also have front, centre, and rear differential locks.
In India, the company sells the Atto 3 EV SUV and the E6 EV MPV. The all-electric BYD Seal sedan will go on sale later this year.
