Kia will finally unveil the production-spec flagship EV9 SUV this month. The SUV, which was first unveiled as a concept in November 2021 at the LA Motor Show, has been in development for 44 months, according to the manufacturer. It will be positioned above the Kia EV6 (also on sale in India).
Kia EV9 platform
The upcoming EV9, like almost every other Hyundai and Kia EV, will be built on the group’s modular skateboard architecture known as E-GMP. For months, the upcoming EV9 SUV has been subjected to rigorous testing on European roads.
The EV9 concept was also recently displayed in India at the Auto Expo 2023. The production-spec SUV will be targeted at premium SUV buyers, and Kia says it does not expect the SUV to sell in large numbers due to its massive size.
The most recent official teasers of the EV9 SUV show off its substantial size, wide front end and tailgate width, and horizontal headlights, which are reminiscent of the all-new Volvo EX90 EV SUV, which has replaced the XC90 overseas.
Other details
The EV9 will be the first Kia to be equipped with the company’s ‘Automode’ autonomous driving technology. It is also intended to support both over-the-air software updates and feature-on-demand (FOD). Kia hopes that this function will become an important part of its future business model, allowing cars to be sold in fewer variants, with owners purchasing the specific functions they desire. This is something that other automakers are considering.
The range and price of the EV9 will be revealed at its world premiere at the end of March. Kia is expected to launch an updated Seltos in India later this year.
